Bacon Brown Sugar Chicken

This week has been really challenging for me, and I was not looking forward to cooking this meal even though it is the easiest one yet. The past week my motivation to do pretty much anything has been slowly depleting and I am in need of some serious encouragement. However, I got myself off the couch and forced myself to do some cleaning around the house, and then began cooking. As the meal was cooking I sat down and attempted to study, however I couldn't focus because my mind and body were in two different spaces. I will say though, my chicken was okay... I had really high expectations and the flavor just didn't match those, which is part of the game when you use three ingredients. The chicken itself was so good, just really plain and bland. Hopefully next week I can cook something really flavorful and yummy.

This weeks reading really interested me and allowed for more in depth explanation of what space is and how it relates differently to every individual. Space is a concept that individuals create in order to store memories about a specific place they have had memorable experiences at. This concept is unique to each individual. Like for me this weekend, my mind knew I needed to study for the big anatomy test this week, however  my body was in the space where I usually watch TV... not do homework! So, that hindered my ability to study efficiently, thus leading me to quit studying at all. Within my new occupation I think Space and place are very relevant. I cook in my kitchen which is the space where i cook, however the place that I cook my crock pot meals is on the right hand side of the countertop. This is because the first time I ever used my crock pot I placed it on the left side and my boyfriend ended up spill the whole thing because he accidentally hit it while doing the dishes. So, based off of that experience I considered the right side of the countertop a safer place to cook. I think that the comparison of place to a container of experiences, is valid.  I believe that without experiences a place is simply just the space that you are in at the current moment, however if you have experiences and memories within the place it becomes personal in either a positive or negative way.  Thus, allowing for that place to hold onto all the experiences you have in that single space. In the Hasselkus book it talked about a child in the back yard, and how the back yard was a place, but the swing set in the back yard was an entirely different place because of the experiences and memories that the child possessed within the swing-set. (pg 40) I think this is extremely important in allowing individuals to separate and organize things within our lives and distinguish what is important and what is not, thus shaping us into the individuals we are throughout our lives.

  1. Hey Erin! You can do it!!
I think all those specific memories, like moving your crockpot to a safer spot, really make up the whole concept of a place becoming a space. I like how you mentioned that the memories that make up a space can be either positive or negative. I also enjoyed the part of the book talking about the backyard and the specific spot of the swing set being a special space compared to the whole backyard place.
Would you say your cooking space holds more positive or negative memories at this point in your crock pot journey?

  2. Nicole,
For me I think that right now it is a good mix between both positive and negative memories that I associate with my crock pot cooking space. However, for me the good memories always out way the bad so the space in itself is pretty positive even though the amount of memories between good and bad are pretty balanced. Hopefully as I continue this journey many more positive memories and experiences will be made in my little corner. I think that will make me and my boyfriend happier lol.
